Terms of use

These terms govern use of the Tip Calc website, its free tip calculator, displayed examples, supporting guides, and related browser-based features.

Last updated July 31, 2026

Acceptance and permitted use

By accessing or using Tip Calc, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use the website. The tip calculator is provided for personal, informational, educational, and other lawful purposes. You may use it to estimate a gratuity, sales tax, final bill, or evenly divided per-person amount.

You may not misuse the site, interfere with its operation, attempt unauthorized access, send malicious traffic, exploit it to harm another person, or use automated requests in a way that degrades availability. Reasonable indexing by legitimate search engines and ordinary inspection of the open-source code are not prohibited.

Calculations are estimates

The tip calculator applies the values you provide to the formulas described on the site. It cannot determine whether the starting bill is correct, whether tax is already included, whether a service charge or automatic gratuity appears elsewhere on a receipt, or whether a particular percentage is customary or required.

Displayed currency values are rounded to two decimal places. A merchant, payment terminal, employer, payroll system, or financial institution may use a different order of operations or rounding method. Splitting an amount can also create a remainder of one or more cents. You should review the receipt and final payment screen before approving a charge.

No financial, tax, legal, or etiquette advice

Tip Calc is a general-purpose arithmetic tool, not a financial adviser, accountant, attorney, tax service, payroll provider, or authority on local tipping practices. Explanations of familiar percentages are contextual starting points, not instructions. Customs vary by country, region, business, service type, and circumstance.

The optional sales-tax field does not determine taxability or retrieve a current local rate. You are responsible for entering an appropriate value and for obtaining professional or official guidance when a tax, payroll, employment, reimbursement, or legal issue matters. A result from the tip calculator should not be used as an official tax record, wage statement, receipt, or proof of payment.

Your responsibility for inputs and payment

You control the bill amount, tip percentage, sales-tax rate, tip basis, currency label, and number of people. You are responsible for checking those inputs and interpreting the result. If the receipt already contains a gratuity or service charge, adding another percentage may create an unintended duplicate tip.

Tip Calc does not send money, alter a merchant bill, divide an actual card charge, or communicate with a restaurant or service provider. Copying a breakdown creates text for convenience; it does not create a payment obligation between people sharing a bill. Each person remains responsible for confirming what they agreed to pay.

Availability and changes

The website is provided on an as-available basis. Features may be changed, corrected, suspended, or discontinued without notice. Hosting outages, browser changes, script blockers, network conditions, or device limitations may prevent some functions from working. No uninterrupted availability is promised.

Content may be updated to improve clarity, accuracy, design, accessibility, search visibility, or performance. A calculation performed after an update may display differently because of formatting or rounding changes even when the underlying formula is equivalent.

License and intellectual property

The project’s source code is made available under the MIT License. That license governs copying, modification, distribution, and use of the covered software. Site names, domain names, original editorial material, visual presentation, and third-party assets or marks may be subject to rights not granted merely by access to the website.

References to restaurants, delivery, salons, hair, nails, tattoos, rideshare, hotels, or other services describe general use cases. Tip Calc is independent and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by a merchant, platform, payment processor, employer, or public agency unless explicitly stated.

Third-party services and links

The production deployment may include hosting, security, analytics, or advertising services. Third parties operate under their own terms and policies. Tip Calc is not responsible for a third party’s availability, content, security, or independent processing practices.

Links may be provided for convenience or transparency. A link does not necessarily imply endorsement. You should review the terms and privacy practices of any external destination before providing information or relying on its content.

Disclaimer and limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, the website and tip calculator are provided without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of accuracy, fitness for a particular purpose, merchantability, noninfringement, or availability. You use the site at your own risk.

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, the site owner and contributors will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, lost data, lost profits, payment disputes, incorrect tips, tax errors, or other losses arising from use of or inability to use the site. Where liability cannot legally be excluded, it is limited to the minimum amount permitted by law.

Changes to these terms

These terms may be revised as the site evolves. The published update date identifies the current version. Continued use after a revision means the updated terms apply to later use, subject to applicable law.

If any provision is found unenforceable, the remaining provisions continue to apply. A failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver. If a contact address is configured in the footer, it may be used for questions about these terms; do not send sensitive payment or receipt data.
